SUV parked on a dirt road

At American Auto Clinic in Albuquerque, NM, we aim to keep your four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive car, truck, or SUV ready for anything. 4X4 systems are pretty low maintenance, but equally as important to maintain as your engine or transmission. At American Auto Clinic our technicians have the tools and knowledge to help keep yours going strong.

A four-wheel-drive system is, in its most basic form, made up of a transfer case, a front differential, a rear differential, axles and a way to engage or disengage your 4X4 system. Some vehicles engage automatically, others electronically, and some manually. No matter the case, it’s important to keep all of these components functional and in good condition, so your car’s 4X4 system is ready when you need it.

The differentials require regular fluid changes, and it’s important to keep an eye on the condition of axles, seals, and bearings. When components run with old or dirty oil, they may end up vulnerable to accelerated wear or serious damage. Transfer cases need gear oil changes as well, much as a manual transmission does - there are also seals and bearings there that need to be kept in good shape.

The output seal in your SUV keeps fluid from leaking out of the transmission and also from the front and rear output shaft to the differentials. If the seals leak, the inner components won’t be lubricated anymore. Eventually, the parts inside will wear out and overheat, and the four-wheel-drive will stop working. Finally, the electronics, shifting, or locking mechanisms in the truck need to be maintained, so they don’t fail you when you need them most. Switches that won’t activate will keep your four-wheel drive from engaging.

If any of your 4X4 or AWD components are giving you trouble, it’s time to let our professional technicians take a look. Catastrophic damage can occur if noises, vibrations, or malfunctions continue to go unchecked, and a simple fix could turn expensive quickly. No matter your repair or maintenance needs, we’ve got you covered. For the best auto service shop in Albuquerque, NM, call or stop by American Auto Clinic today.
